Ailene Thiel

Ailene Thiel is an experienced global healthcare professional, with a career that spans four continents. She has demonstrated successful leadership in the medical, hospital, pharmaceutical and allied healthcare industries.  Ailene passionately promotes scientific, evidence-based, sustainable innovation to improve medical outcomes and the patient experience.

Ailene’s career encompasses senior management and Board-level roles in the UK, Europe, the US, Latin America, the Middle East and Australia, including the UK National Health Service (NHS), a leading global pharmaceutical company, a major UK plc, a multinational provider of pharmaceutical information and clinical decision support technology, and major US health systems.

In the multinational pharmaceutical company Glaxo Wellcome, Ailene was initially responsible for the company’s Disease Management franchise in the UK, leading the development and successful commercialisation of innovative chronic disease management solutions. Upon Glaxo Wellcome’s merger with SmithKline Beecham to form pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, Ailene was appointed to the role of European Therapy Area Director for HIV. Based in Paris, she managed an international team, focusing on minimising time to market for new medicines and maximising sales and profitability for the company’s HIV portfolio across Europe. In this role, Ailene led a multinational team, comprising senior management from the areas of Discovery, Research & Development, Medical, Operations, Regulatory, Marketing, Sales, Reimbursement and Distribution. This led her to work closely with the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the medicines regulatory and reimbursement authorities of the individual European countries, and major UK and European pharmaceutical distributors. The resulting strategies that were agreed and implemented under her leadership were recognised as having a major impact in reducing the time of new products to peak sales, substantially increasing revenue and achieving market leadership for the HIV portfolio.

As technology gained an increasingly important role in healthcare, Ailene focussed her efforts on identifying how this could be applied to clinical decision making, particularly prescribing. As Deputy CEO of the Spanish division of United Business Media plc, she led the transformation of the company’s drug directory and the design and development of clinical decision support systems. She defined and directed the company’s acquisition objectives in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. In Bahrain (Middle East), Ailene worked with the Spanish multinational Indra, The World Health Organisation (WHO), the Ministry of Health, and the Supreme Council of Health to realise the Bahraini Government’s vision of a fully integrated health system across Primary and Secondary Care.

With advances in the application of advanced analytics to healthcare, Ailene promoted the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to support clinical decision making in several major US, UK and European healthcare institutions. In collaboration with the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), she led high-profile projects involving risk stratifying cohorts of multi-morbid patients and predicting those that would benefit from specific treatment regimes. In the US, she was responsible for scoping and delivering a number of healthcare projects that led her to work with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), The Department of Defense (DoD), the Veterans Administration (VA) and several leading hospitals and health systems.

Building on her commitment to sustainability and innovation in Healthcare, Ailene co-founded The Virtuous Cycle Collaboratory cooperative (tvc2) where, working closely with her US and Europe-based partners, she leads on sustainable healthcare practices, innovation in medicine and therapies, improving access to quality healthcare, and technology-enabled care services.

Ailene earned a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the University of St. Andrews, where she graduated with Honours. She later completed the UBM Business Leadership Program at the University of Princeton and Cranfield School of Management. She is trilingual in English, French and Spanish.
